A few weekends ago, some friends and I visited Wando for the weekend. Wando is an island that’s a two hour bus ride south of Gwangju. The bus tickets cost around 18,600 KRW ($14.18) one way. We left around 10 a.m. and arrived around noon. We would have left earlier, but the weather forecast said it was supposed to rain all weekend so we didn’t feel rushed to get there. Ironically, it didn’t rain once:)

When we arrived, we got some lunch and then bought groceries for our trip. We were staying at a pension which is similar to a cabin, but with more facilities. To get to our pension we took a 15 minute taxi ride from the city. Our pension was the perfect location because it was right across from the beach. The pension was pretty nice! It was very simple and only had two rooms, but it had a kitchen, bathroom, and a nice deck to hang out on.

We unpacked and then headed straight for the beach! This was my first time going to the beach in Korea and it was so much fun! We swam for a while, read books, and talked. The weather actually turned out to be perfect and the water felt great. The beach was pretty big too so although there were other people there, it never felt too crowded.

After a while, we walked back to the pension and cooked some samgyupsal, Korean barbecue, for dinner: the best vacation meal! The rest of the night was spent enjoying the sunset and then playing games.

In the morning, we took one last walk along the beach before checking out and heading back to Gwangju. Although our time in Wando was short, it was such a refreshing and relaxing weekend!

About Me

Hello! My name is Nicole Gardner and I am from Kansas City, Missouri. Going into my senior year of college in the midst of a pandemic, made me rethink my post-graduation plans.  As a middle school education major I knew that teaching is what I wanted to do, but I also realized that I wanted to travel the world more.  This inspired me to get my Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate in order to combine my two passions. And this is how I ended up living in Gwangju, South Korea!

As I spend the year teaching for the EPIK program in South Korea, I wanted to make this blog as a way to include my family and friends on my adventures in South Korea as well as anyone who is interested in what it's like to be an English teacher here.
